SCAM on Etsy!

My Monkey quilt photos were stolen and used in a SCAM shop on Etsy that is still in business! Etsy is dealing with Kroftwerk now but I convo'd the seller and asked them not to STEAL my copyrighted images. They sold their non-existent monkey quilt 5 times...OH! and they sold the Monkey Quilt pattern too! HAH!

I feel bad for the unsuspecting customers who think they are getting a really good deal and are really just getting their money stolen. Hopefully by the time you read this, the above link will no longer work but I am certain they will just open another shop under a different name. I have seen this exact thing happen before. Please be cautious and check feedback before making any purchases on Etsy or E-bay!

Thank you to Tanis who spied it by fluke on Etsy yesterday morning. It certainly is a small world and we artists have to watch out for one another. Thanks :o)

  1. That is unbelieveable!! Have you thought of maybe watermarking your photos so that people can't steal them?

  2. OH MY GOSH!! I can't believe it!!
I just went to their store site and they show 36 sales with NO feedback!! So, all their sales are most likely fake! Great idea Noriko has...watermarking your photos! Did you report them to Etsy? They shouldn't get away with what they're doing and people should be warned! Good thing Tanis caught it!

  10. What a shame that some people have no morals. I am so glad that you found out about them. Hopefully they will stop representing your work as their own. Wishing you the best. Melody

  11. This is so shameful, so sick. But I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The internet is full of scams. But boy, does it ever feel like a personal invasion when it happens to you.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I can't believe that people do it and think they will get away with it, they should have to refund everyone, and refund you in some way as well, I hope Etsy takes a firm hand with this!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Wait....they're still on Etsy. How does that happen?

    ReplyDelete
  14. No way! I know these things happen, but eeeech!

  15. It's hard enough for us to get a business going and build a following without people stealing ideas and patterns. I can't believe it. I'll certainly spread the word on my blog (not allowed to callout sellers on Etsy.com). Good luck in getting it resolved and keep us posted on your blog.

  16. I just don't get why people do this? They are so desperate to what...make money? Just so blatant! And how they don't think they'll get caught!!?? I will keep checking on your blog to see how your journey goes. We all need to be informed and educated about this kind of behavior. Good luck, and sorry you have to deal with this......

  20. I just left negative feedback...hope I don't get in trouble for it but its worth the try~!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Urgh, things like that make me so angry!

    ReplyDelete
  22. It's unfortunate that Etsy has become an easy target for scammers. I imagine that things like this will become more prevalent as the economy worsens. It is easier to scam people online than to steal from them in person.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Well they are still open but Etsy closed the forum thread about them. Why can't they close the shop as fast as they close a thread???? At least it brought awareness to a lot of folks. 118 posts in two hours. Unfortunately they have reached 50 sales already. Hopefully the neg feedback given will prevent any more sales while Etsy moseys on over to take a look.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yeah!!!!!
    Finally CLOSED!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sorry you had this happen to you, Laurraine, but I'm glad to see you're surrounded by strong supporters and advocates. Hope that's the last of these scammers (probably just wishful thinking on my part...).

    ReplyDelete
  26. that makes me sick! people will be turned off etsy when they have things like this happen so i hope they stop these people for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thank you so much for posting this, and I am so sorry this has happened to you. Stealing another's art is just sick and wrong.

There is one part in your post that really shouldn't be a blanket statement, that sellers with sales and no feed back are scammers.

I just opened an Etsy shop, my second actually. I have several sales all in the last 2 days. How would I have time to have feedback? My other shop has over 90 feedback all at 100%. Now for me, I am not so worried, but there are very honest people out there as well.

Thank you again for the warning, but I worry what these things will do to new struggling folks that are honest on Etsy.

  28. Ellesbelle,
Thank you for visiting my blog!
I wanted to be clear that I did not say or mean to imply that shops with no feedback are scammers. Obviously there are lots of new shops out there and I used to be one of them. I was only telling people to be cautious and to remember that the internet is the internet and not all things they see are true... especially if it is way too good to be true. I hope that makes sense.
    Hugs, Laurraine

  31. Weren't they here before under the same name? I could have sworn I saw them but then when I saw they were only here a few days, I almost convinced myself I had dreamt the whole other nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  32. coming from my friend Sonia's blog... so sorry for you & glad the shop was closed after you found out... it always amazes me how dishonest people can be ! I feel concerned because i'm a regular etsy buyer. thanks for bringing this out in the light.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow, how utterly criminal is that. I'm so sorry you were victimized, your such a creative & talented artist. I'm happy to hear that the store has been closed.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Must be careful, this is true. I am happy that they have been caught but it is unfortunate that you and your creations have been used in such a manner. If only individuals like this could be permanently removed from the internet!

    ReplyDelete
  35. do u spose the kroft shop is associated with billy kroft who designs furniture mentioned on www.apartmenttherapy.com

    ReplyDelete
  36. wow Laurraine, what a nightmare! I hope there is a paper trail somewhere so they can go after these guys and return the money to the unsuspecting buyers. I wonder if they used paypal? are all the other products on the site scammed too?

    ReplyDelete
  37. That's just so awful! It's one of those things you hope never happens to you!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I bought something from them! They didn't have any feedback at the time. I feel like such an idiot. Thank you so much for writing about their scam - otherwise I wouldn't be sure what was going on now. I'm a new Etsy user and naively thought this kind of thing didn't happen there.

Now their Etsy shop is closed but they are still responding to email (jrmckenna@canada.com) - reassuring me that my item "will be shipped sometime next week." What horrible people.

    ReplyDelete
  39. This is really awfu and terrible !! It's so sad that people would hurt others like that. >_<

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh NO! Thank you for visiting my blog Anonymous (scam victim).

My heart goes out to you and all the other 50 or so people that were robbed. Please let me know if Etsy does anything to have your money refunded. I think it would be wise to contact Etsy and let them know what has happened.

Please do not let this stop you from shopping on Etsy. There are so many great places to shop on Etsy and so many honest and friendly sellers who will go out of theirr way to please their customers. I've been shopping on Etsy as well as selling for 3 years now and I have never had one problem. I am sorry that this has happened to you especially since you are new to Etsy.

    Big Hugs to you, Laurraine

  46. good evening patchwork...did you contact etsy to report this? the reason i'm asking is that i too purchased from this "store" and when trying to get some answers from etsy they say they are not aware of this "scam." i'm just trying to get some answers. i actually found out about this after i went to their website and it was closed, not by being notified from etsy. i started questioning what i had done and started looking to google to see if any news was out there and there was you blog.maybe you can add some light to my situation

    ReplyDelete
  47. Amazing...it's terrible! I like the idea of watermarking all photos!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Robin,

Yes, I reported them several times as soon as I found out. I even told them who some of the other quilts belonged to and provided links as proof. Did you tell Etsy that the shop was shut down? I am surprised they said that they didn't know about it!

Unfortunately all these matters that Etsy deals with are Private so I do not have any more information on what happened.

I believe you could file a report of non-delivered goods at Etsy.... although I am not sure what they will do. I also think that you can do the same at PayPal but you can read about it here: https://www.paypal.com/ca/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/gen/ua/policy_buyer_complaint-outside

I really hope that you can get your money back. It is very unfortunate that something like this could ruin the Etsy shopping experience.

    Hugs, Laurraine

  49. this is what etsy sent as an email today feb 16: Dear Robin,

I am so sorry, but Etsy has not been previously aware of a scam
regarding this seller. Though we are not liberty to discuss reasons for
closure of Kroftwerk at this time, these reports are one or more of the
following: 1) Not supported by Etsy's findings 2)New information or
incidents not previously reported to Etsy 3) Requests for practices that
are against Etsy's privacy policy. Etsy cannot not know the intention or
possible behavior of an individual beforehand, but when incidents occur
that indicate that a member may have violated Etsy policy, they may be
suspended. Our policies are designed to protect the entire Etsy community.

Since the seller has not responded to your efforts about your
transaction, you may file a Non-Delivery Report with Etsy. We will
notify the seller by email in an effort to help facilitate a
conversation between you in order to help resolve your transaction
concern. Kindly fill out the Transaction Report in the Help section, and
we can get started as soon as we get it. Be sure to check our spam
    folder for our email.

Once you have filed the report, please update us through abuse@etsy.com
if you have any news or would like to close the case.

You may also wish to contact your credit card company to dispute the charge.

We will do our best to help you and the seller settle the transaction.

    Kind regards,
    Emily

  50. as a newby to paypal and etsy i paid for my purchase with the funds in my paypal account and did not put it on a cc. after contacting paypal they said there was no recourse through them. i made this purchase at midnight on feb 12 into feb 13. i feel if you made this report to etsy on the 11th or 12th they should have done something earlier to protect future customers. it is puzzling to me that they would shut down a forum thread but not the site and continue to allow purchases. i will go through the steps for a "not received item" knowing nothing will be done only to help future people from being scammed.

  52. Wow - I can't believe that something like that would happen on Etsy. That's just so wrong!!!

  54. Wow, how horrible! I must be so naive, I never even thought of etsy as a place where scammers would be, I guess I have been lucky. What a violation to you as a crafter and to other people who may be trying to make a first sale as a genuine person with no feedback.
